The 09 season was tough due the constant high water but it must be good for the fish allowing them to travel freely up and down the river system. I was up on one of the spawning streams today and spotted a good few fish on the move, looks like this will be an other good spawning season, lets hope we get no more winter floods. The quota for the 2010 season is rumoured to be over 2,000 salmon to be harvested this is an increase of about 1400 from this year.(I hope the Government scientist / fishery boards know what they are doing) I feel that with the drift nets removed the catch and release should be in place for a minimum of 4 years just to give the salmon the best chance to replenish the run that the Nore was once famous for.
One of the highlights of the year must be the big 32lb salmon caught in September what a fish. Another fish of this size was lost after a 20 minute battle at Iniatioge back in August. On a personal note I had had two visits from journalists from Trout & Salmon magazine , Mike Weaver was on the Nore in June and despite high water and very cold weather Mike managed to get the Nore to give up some of its trout, this article will be in the March/April edition . In September Michael Shortt's brief was to travel to the Nore with fishing photographer Gardiner Mitchell and catch a big silver salmon, things didn't go to plan, you can read all about it in the Decembers issue. |
